merengue

Dominican ballroom dance

Merengue is a style of dance music originating in the Dominican Republic, characterized by a fast two-beat rhythm and typically featuring accordion, saxophone, and güira (a metal scraper).

The accompanying dance involves partners in close hold moving their hips in sync with the beat: The band played merengue until midnight.

Not to be confused with meringue, the whipped egg-white confection.
