praetor
Consul's judicial subordinate
A praetor was a high-ranking magistrate in ancient Rome, second only to the consuls.
Praetors held judicial authority and could command armies.
The office expanded over time—the praetor urbanus handled legal disputes among citizens, while the praetor peregrinus judged cases involving foreigners.
The word survives in praetorian, relating to the elite imperial guard.
