odes

Verses of glorification

Odes are poems, typically lyrical and often elaborate in structure, that address a particular subject with elevated feeling.

The classical ode, associated with ancient Greek poets like Pindar, celebrated heroic achievements or public occasions; later poets like Keats wrote odes to abstract concepts or everyday objects (Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to a Nightingale).

The form suggests serious admiration, though modern usage sometimes applies ode loosely to any tribute or homage: Her essay was an ode to her grandmother's cooking.
