Pliny

Ancient encyclopedist, Rome

Pliny refers to two ancient Roman writers, uncle and nephew.

Pliny the Elder (23–79 CE) wrote *Natural History*, an encyclopedic work covering everything from astronomy to zoology—a foundational text for later European science.

He died observing the eruption of Vesuvius.

Pliny the Younger (61–113 CE) is known for his letters, which provide vivid accounts of Roman life, including the only eyewitness description of Vesuvius's destruction of Pompeii.
