Galileo

Heliocentric theory champion

Galileo refers to the Italian astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), whose telescopic observations and defense of heliocentrism made him a central figure in the scientific revolution.

His conflict with the Catholic Church has made him a symbol of science versus religious authority.

The name now appears on spacecraft, navigation systems, and scientific institutions: the Galileo mission to Jupiter, Europe's Galileo satellite system.
