Oliver Cromwell

English republican dictator

Oliver Cromwell was an English military and political leader who overthrew the monarchy during the English Civil War and ruled as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658.

His name evokes Puritan severity, republican ideals, and the execution of King Charles I.

In Ireland, Cromwell remains a byword for brutal conquest: He's remembered like Cromwell in those parts.
