refracting

Bending through glass

Refracting describes the bending of light, sound, or other waves as they pass from one medium into another—such as light entering water from air.

A refracting telescope uses lenses rather than mirrors to gather and focus light: The refracting telescope revealed Saturn's rings.

The term applies wherever waves change direction due to a change in the medium they travel through.
