orbits

Paths around planets

Orbits are the curved paths objects follow around other objects in space—a planet orbiting a star, a moon orbiting a planet, a satellite orbiting Earth.

The word extends to any regular circuit: The security guard makes orbits around the building every hour.

Eye sockets are also called orbits—the bony cavities housing the eyeballs.

To orbit is to travel such a path: The spacecraft orbits Mars.

Figuratively, things in someone's orbit fall within their sphere of influence.
