kinematics

Motion without forces

Kinematics is the branch of physics that describes motion—position, velocity, acceleration—without considering the forces that cause it.

A kinematics problem might ask how far a ball travels before hitting the ground, treating gravity's effect mathematically without asking why gravity exists.

The related field dynamics adds forces back in.
