magnification

Making things bigger

Magnification is the process of making something appear larger than it actually is, or the degree to which something has been enlarged.

A microscope's magnification determines how much bigger specimens appear; a photograph can be printed at various magnifications.

The word extends to exaggeration: The press magnification of minor scandals distorts public perception.

In optics, magnification is expressed as a ratio: 10x magnification.
