Index

Periodical or database

An index is a guide for locating information—the alphabetical list at the back of a book pointing to page numbers, or a database structure enabling quick searches.

Index extends to anything that indicates or measures: the consumer price index, a stock market index.

In math, an index is an exponent.

The plural is indexes for books and databases, indices in technical contexts.

To index is to create such a guide or to adjust values based on an index: wages indexed to inflation.
