heliocentrism
Planets orbit star
Heliocentrism is the astronomical model placing the sun at the center of the solar system, with Earth and other planets orbiting around it.
The term usually appears in contrast to geocentrism, the older belief that Earth occupied the center.
Copernicus proposed the heliocentric model in the 16th century, and it became foundational to modern astronomy: The shift from geocentrism to heliocentrism transformed our understanding of the cosmos.
