leg
Below the knee
The leg that begins at your hip and ends at your foot inspires the many other uses of the word.
Limbs or supports that typically touch the ground are called legs, so most mammals and tables have four, bugs and spiders have six or eight, and squid and octopi don’t have any (they have arms instead).
In parts of clothing that cover the lower part of the body, legs are the parts that surround your legs.
Figuratively speaking, a leg is one of multiple segments of a journey: We missed a flight on the first leg of our trip.
If something abstract has legs, it shows the ability to become quickly known by many people: The story quickly got legs when the president tweeted it.
