prefix

Beginning word element

A prefix is a word element attached to the beginning of a word to modify its meaning: un- reverses happy, pre- puts war before something, re- makes build happen again.

The term extends to any code or identifier placed at the front: area code prefix, title prefix.

To prefix something is to add such an element: Prefix the filename with today's date.
