seed

Origin of growth

A seed is the offspring of a plant, from which another plant can grow.

Many seeds are food and are designated with compound terms whose first term names the plant: mustard seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds.

The idea of source or origin is central in other meanings of seed.

Phrases of the form seed of X typically refer to the progenitor of the thing X: seeds of discontent, seeds of doubt.

As a verb, seed means to plant a crop, or in sports, to rank a contestant on the basis of earlier performance.

In combination with a number, a player may be designated according to this ranking: He’s the number two seed in the tournament.
