stempost
Prow's vertical backbone
The stempost is the upright timber at the bow of a wooden ship, rising from the keel to support the hull planking where they meet at the front.
It forms the ship's foremost structural member, the spine to which the curved bow planks attach.
The corresponding timber at the rear is the sternpost.
