flute

Sideways blown instrument

A flute is a woodwind instrument played by blowing across a hole near one end while fingering keys along its length.

The orchestral flute is held sideways; recorders and similar instruments are held vertically.

Flute also names a tall narrow glass for champagne, and a decorative groove carved into a column or other surface.

To flute is to play the flute, speak in flutelike tones, or carve such grooves.
