rhizome

Horizontal subterranean stem

A rhizome is an underground plant stem that grows horizontally, sending out roots and shoots from its nodes.

Unlike true roots, rhizomes store nutrients and allow plants to spread vegetatively—ginger, turmeric, and iris all grow from rhizomes.

In philosophy, Deleuze and Guattari borrowed the term to describe non-hierarchical networks of ideas that connect at any point rather than branching from a single root.

The bamboo spread through the garden via its aggressive rhizomes.
