foot

Third of yard

The structure at the lower end of the vertebrate leg inspires all other meanings of foot, including another very common meaning, a unit of measure in the imperial system equal to 12 inches.

That kind of foot often relies heavily on context for its exact interpretation: someone who is “6 foot” is six feet tall.

Someone who lives at 9,000 feet lives at an elevation of 9,000 feet above sea level.

Foot can also refer to an inanimate object that either supports something above it (the feet of a table), or is at the bottom (the foot of the bed).

If you foot a bill, you pay the cost of something.
