stemming

Stripping word endings

Stemming is cutting back the main stem of a plant, or the action of removing stems from fruits or vegetables.

In skiing, stemming is angling the skis inward to slow down or turn.

In computing and linguistics, stemming reduces words to their root forms: "running" and "runs" become "run." The word also describes stopping or restraining a flow: stemming the tide of criticism.
