turgor

Plant cell pressure

Turgor is the pressure exerted by fluid inside a cell against its membrane or wall.

In plants, turgor keeps stems upright and leaves firm; when turgor drops from lack of water, plants wilt.

The term appears mainly in biology: The cells maintained turgor despite the heat.

Turgid describes something swollen with fluid, or figuratively, pompous prose.
