suffix

Attached word ending

A suffix is a word element attached to the end of a root or stem to modify its meaning or grammatical function: -ness turns adjectives into nouns, -ed marks past tense.

The term extends to anything appended: She added the suffix "Jr." to her son's name.

As a verb, to suffix is to attach such an element.
