bine

Hop plant's stem

A bine is the climbing or twining stem of a hop plant or similar vine.

Unlike vines that climb by tendrils or suckers, bines wrap their stems around supports in a spiral.

The word appears most often in brewing contexts, where hops grow on bines: The bines had reached the top of the trellis by midsummer.
