roots

Subterranean plant parts

Roots are the underground parts of plants that anchor them and absorb water and nutrients.

The word extends to origins and foundations: She returned to her roots in rural Alabama.

To root is to dig with the snout like a pig, or to search by rummaging: rooting through drawers.

To root for someone is to cheer them on—a different word entirely.

To take root is to become established.

The root of a problem is its underlying cause.

In math, a root is a number that produces a given value when multiplied by itself: the square root of 9 is 3.
