bulb

Plant's underground storage

A bulb is a rounded underground structure from which certain plants grow, consisting of fleshy leaves or scales surrounding a bud—tulips, onions, and garlic all grow from bulbs.

The shape gives rise to other meanings: a light bulb is the glass enclosure containing the filament or LED that produces light, and any rounded swelling at the end of something may be called a bulb, like the bulb of a thermometer or a nasal bulb syringe.

Plant the bulbs in fall for spring blooms.
