musket
Bayonet-fitted firearm
A musket is a long-barreled firearm that preceded the rifle as infantry's standard weapon.
Muskets were loaded through the muzzle with powder and ball, fired by various ignition mechanisms, and were notoriously inaccurate beyond short range.
They dominated warfare from the 16th through mid-19th centuries before rifled barrels made them obsolete.
The soldiers formed ranks and fired their muskets in volleys.
