tumbler

Lock's internal mechanism

A tumbler is a drinking glass with a flat bottom and no handle or stem, typically used for water or spirits.

The name comes from early versions with rounded bottoms that would tumble over if set down—forcing you to finish your drink.

A tumbler is also an acrobat who performs flips and somersaults, or the rotating drum of a clothes dryer.

In locks, tumblers are the pins or levers that must align for the mechanism to open.
