matchlock

Early firearm ignition

A matchlock is an early type of firearm ignition system in which a slow-burning fuse (the match) is held in a clamp and lowered into a pan of priming powder when the trigger is pulled.

The term also refers to a gun using this mechanism: The soldiers carried matchlocks into battle.

Matchlocks preceded flintlocks and were common from the 15th through 17th centuries.
