broadside

Ship's exposed flank

A broadside is the side of a ship above the waterline, and by extension, a simultaneous firing of all guns on that side: The frigate unleashed a broadside.

This sense of overwhelming force extends to verbal attacks—a broadside is a harsh, comprehensive criticism: The senator delivered a broadside against the proposed legislation.

The word also names a large sheet of paper printed on one side, used historically for announcements or proclamations.

As an adverb, broadside means sideways: The truck hit the car broadside.
