propellant

Thrust-producing substance

A propellant is a substance that provides thrust or drives something forward.

In rocketry, propellants are fuels and oxidizers that combust to produce gases expelled at high speed: solid rocket propellant, liquid propellant engines.

In aerosol cans, the propellant is a compressed gas that forces contents out when the valve opens.

Bullets use explosive propellants to leave the barrel.
