musketeers

Early gunpowder troops

Musketeers were soldiers armed with muskets—the long-barreled firearms that dominated European warfare from the 16th through 18th centuries.

The word now appears almost exclusively in reference to Alexandre Dumas's novel *The Three Musketeers* and its adaptations: All for one and one for all, as the musketeers say.

The phrase evokes loyal camaraderie and swashbuckling adventure.
