ray gun
Futuristic beam weapon
A ray gun is a fictional weapon that fires beams of energy rather than projectiles—a staple of science fiction since the early 20th century.
The term evokes retro-futuristic imagery: Flash Gordon with his ray gun, a child's plastic ray gun.
Real-world directed-energy weapons exist but are rarely called ray guns.
