sulfur
Gunpowder's yellow ingredient
Sulfur is a yellow nonmetallic chemical element that occurs naturally in volcanic regions and mineral deposits.
It has a distinctive sharp smell, most familiar from rotten eggs and struck matches, which comes from hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds.
Sulfur has been known since ancient times, when it was called brimstone—the "fire and brimstone" of religious texts refers to burning sulfur.
Industrial uses include making sulfuric acid, fertilizers, and vulcanizing rubber.
