cutlass

Curved naval sword

A cutlass is a short, broad sword with a slightly curved blade, associated especially with sailors and pirates of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The design suited close combat in the cramped quarters of ships.

The word now evokes romanticized piracy: The pirate brandished his cutlass.
