smoke
Chimney's gray output
Smoke is the opaque or translucent mixture of gases given off by things that are burning.
It co-occurs with fire more than any other meaningful word, which makes the expression “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” true of both the words and the things they signify.
If something smokes, it gives off smoke.
If a person smokes, they are a user of cigarettes or some other specified product whose vapors are inhaled.
If you smoke a food, you subject it to wood smoke as a way of curing and imparting flavor: smoked salmon, smoked bacon.
The phrase smoke someone out can be used figuratively or literally to denote driving them out into the open.
