muskets

Smoothbore infantry weapons

Muskets were the dominant infantry firearm from the 16th through 19th centuries—long-barreled, smoothbore guns fired from the shoulder.

They required manual loading of powder and ball, making rate of fire slow but deadly in massed volleys.

The muskets crackled across the field.

Musket appears in historical contexts and period pieces; modern firearms aren't called muskets.
