bite
Teeth mark left
Bite is something that creatures, including humans, do with their piercing mouth parts.
If the thing being bitten is alive, a bite usually inflicts pain.
An instance of biting or the result of biting is also called a bite (insect bite, bite of an apple).
Figuratively, if something inanimate bites, it might inflict some pain or damage: The handcuffs are biting my wrists.
Or, it might add something desirable: The lime zest gave the cookies a tangy bite.
A bite out of something is a significant reduction of it: That car repair really took a bite out of my paycheck.
