wadding

Quilt's inner padding

Wadding is soft, fibrous material used for padding, stuffing, or packing.

It fills quilts, cushions, and shipping boxes.

In firearms, wadding is the material placed between powder and shot to create a seal: He tamped down the wadding before loading the musket.

The word also refers to cotton or gauze used as surgical dressing.
