musketeer
Old French soldier
A musketeer is a soldier armed with a musket—a muzzle-loaded long gun used from the 16th through 18th centuries.
The term evokes romantic notions of swashbuckling adventure, largely thanks to Alexandre Dumas's novel *The Three Musketeers*.
By extension, musketeer describes any loyal companion ready to fight alongside others: The four of us were musketeers back in college. (Capitalized Musketeer may refer to team mascots or specific characters.)
