corsair
Mediterranean pirate historically
A corsair is a pirate, especially one operating in the Mediterranean.
The term also applies to a pirate ship itself.
Corsair carries a slightly romantic or swashbuckling connotation compared to the blunter pirate: The corsairs of the Barbary Coast terrorized European shipping for centuries.
