mace

Nutmeg seed covering

Mace names two unrelated things.

One is a medieval weapon—a heavy club with a spiked or flanged metal head, used to crush armor.

Ceremonial maces survive as symbols of authority in parliaments and universities.

The other mace is a spice made from the lacy covering of nutmeg seeds, with a similar but more delicate flavor.

Mace is also a trademark for a pepper spray used in self-defense: She kept mace in her purse.
