Brown Bess
British infantry musket
Brown Bess is the nickname for the British Land Pattern Musket, the standard infantry firearm of the British military from the early 18th century through the mid-19th century.
The weapon saw service in conflicts from the Seven Years' War through the Napoleonic Wars and American Revolution.
The origin of the name is uncertain—perhaps from the browned barrel finish or simply affectionate soldier slang.
