musket ball

Old firearm projectile

A musket ball is the spherical lead projectile fired from a musket, the muzzle-loading firearm used from the 16th through 19th centuries.

Unlike modern bullets, which are elongated and fitted into cartridges, musket balls were smooth, round, and loaded separately with gunpowder.

The term appears in historical contexts: Surgeons extracted musket balls from wounded soldiers.
