chest

Where ribs live

A chest is the front of the human torso between the neck and abdomen, containing the heart and lungs.

By extension, chest describes storage containers—typically rectangular boxes with hinged lids: a treasure chest, a hope chest, a chest of drawers.

The connection is the enclosed, protected space.

To get something off your chest is to relieve yourself by confessing or expressing something burdensome.
