back

Spine's home territory

Back, as adverb, adjective, noun, and verb, is the opposite of front and roughly synonymous with rear.

When time is involved, back refers to the past: I wrote the letter back in 2010.

When space is involved, back is the direction behind you, or behind the speaker or subject at hand: She walked back three steps.

Your back is the rear side of your torso, where your spine is: I strained my back when I bent over.

The back of a building or physical object is the side opposite the front: They left through the house’s back door.

In some sports, a back plays behind the front line of players: The running back scored a touchdown.

To back is to move backwards: Please back the car out of the garage.
