fins

Aquatic steering appendages

Fins are the flat appendages fish use for swimming—steering, stabilizing, and propelling through water.

The concept extends to similar structures on other animals (dolphin fins, shark fins) and to fin-shaped equipment: the rubber fins swimmers wear on their feet, or the stabilizing surfaces on rockets and surfboards.

In slang, fins can mean hands or, in old American usage, five-dollar bills.
