cortex
Gray matter layer
The cortex is the outer layer of an organ or structure, distinguished from its interior.
In anatomy, it most often refers to the cerebral cortex—the folded outer surface of the brain responsible for higher functions like thought, perception, and memory: damage to the prefrontal cortex.
Plants have cortex too: the tissue between bark and the woody core.
The adrenal cortex is the outer portion of the adrenal gland, producing hormones like cortisol.
