white matter

Brain's pale regions

White matter is the paler tissue of the brain and spinal cord, consisting mainly of nerve fibers sheathed in myelin—the fatty substance that gives it its whitish appearance.

These fibers transmit signals between different regions of gray matter, where the actual processing occurs.

The MRI showed damage to the white matter.
