glia

Brain's support cells

Glia are the non-neuronal cells of the nervous system that support and protect neurons.

They outnumber neurons in the brain and perform essential functions: insulating nerve fibers, supplying nutrients, removing waste, and modulating neural signals.

Types include astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia.

Also called glial cells or neuroglia.
