quinine
Cinchona bark extract
Quinine is a bitter compound extracted from cinchona bark, historically the primary treatment for malaria.
It remains in use for severe cases resistant to newer drugs.
The intensely bitter taste makes quinine a flavoring agent in tonic water, originally formulated to make antimalarial doses palatable: gin and tonic.
Quinine can cause side effects including ringing in the ears and visual disturbances.
